On 13 & 14 of November 2010, MaMis en Movimiento and Arbeitskreis Neue Erziehung e.V. (ANE) organized a two-days-seminar denominated: The Bilingual Spanish-German Kindergarden as impulse for integration of multi-cultural families in Berlin”.

Around 70 people, among them educational German institutions, parents and educators from the bilingual kindergardens met at the Hertie School of Governance. The goal was to open a discussion forum in order to reflect and analyze their contribution on bilingualism and integration.
Among other findings, one can mention the increasing interest for the Spanish language; the need of organizing networking activities of the Kitas as well as the development of a pedagogic curriculum in order to promote an active bilingualism with more perspective in the future.

After the seminar MaMis en Movimiento received the recognition of the Senatsverwaltung für Bildung to carry out the first pilot capacity-building program on bilinguism dedicated to educators of kindergardens and interested parents. Furthermore, it was possible to include on the agendas of the bilingual spanish-german kindergardens the construction of an active network; and the spanish-german community as an important institutional actor in the field of bilingualism and integration forum discussions was strengthened.

MaMis en Movimiento lays an important precedent on the process of openness to other languages and cultures in Germany. One can be sure that it is an important step to institutionalize inter-cultural discussions as a tool to make more visible the voice and needs of minority groups and to cut down the differences.
